Once again some good information below from the wellness department at work. I don't buy farm raised salmon anymore as I also read in a "Taste of Home" magazine farmed salmon is/can be high in mercury. Tom Thumb used to carry wild salmon, now they only carry farmed, guess because it's cheaper.
"While salmon is always on the "good food list" because of its beneficial omega 3 fatty acids, many wonder why farmed salmon is on the list to avoid. Here are the reasons from the Centers for Science in the Public Interest:
When famed salmon escape from ocean pens, they threaten wild salmon and other fish by competing with them for food and spawning grounds. Waste from most salmon farms is released directly into the ocean. Parasites and diseases from farmed salmon can spread to wild fish swimming near the farms. Salmon farmers may use antibiotics to control outbreaks of disease among the fish, which encourages the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It takes three pounds of wild fish to grow one pound of farmed salmon. So farming salmon actually uses more fish than it produces."
